Waikapu is a census-designated place located in Maui County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,115.
Waikapu is located at 20°51’10” North, 156°30’36” West (20.852844, -156.510014)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 28.5 km² (11.0 mi²). 28.4 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,115 people, 347 households, and 274 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 39.2/km² (101.6/mi²). There are 360 housing units at an average density of 12.7/km² (32.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 15.25% White, 0.36% African American, 0.27% Native American, 48.61% Asian, 9.60% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 25.38% from two or more races. 6.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 347 households out of which 40.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.0% are non-families. 15.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.21 and the average family size is 3.57.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $62,813, and the median income for a family is $65,781. Males have a median income of $43,125 versus $32,875 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $24,564. 1.9% of the population and 0.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.7% of those under the age of 18 and 1.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
