Maalaea

Maalaea is a census-designated place located in Maui County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 454. Maalaea is the site of a small boat harbor, as well as the state-of-the-art Maui Ocean Center.

Maalaea is located at 20°48’34” North, 156°29’27” West (20.809336, -156.490729)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 19.9 km² (7.7 mi²). 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 37.94% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 454 people, 263 households, and 119 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 36.7/km² (95.3/mi²). There are 600 housing units at an average density of 48.6/km² (125.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 85.90% White, 0.22% African American, 0.44% Native American, 6.61% Asian, 1.54% Pacific Islander, 0.88% from other races, and 4.41% from two or more races. 4.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 263 households out of which 5.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% are married couples living together, 4.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.4% are non-families. 42.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.73 and the average family size is 2.27.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 6.6% under the age of 18, 2.2% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 44.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 112.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $53,750, and the median income for a family is $72,083. Males have a median income of $36,544 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $43,571. 3.7% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.5% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
